I never go anywhere without consulting Trip Advisor! They have great website - very comprehensive and the member reviews and photos are invaluable.
The site is slightly difficult to navigate and very cluttered though - that's why I prefer to use google. If I want to learn about a hotel, all I type in is the name of the hotel and tripadvisor - it will usually the be the first one on the page. Then I scroll down and read the comments at the front of the page - these are usually the latest ones and are very helpful. Some travelers also upload their own photos - which is much better than the ones provided by the companies themselves because they often show the good parts - not the bad ones.
Tripadvisor has saved me from making mistakes many times.
