...First,a diatribe about S.F.cover art on both sides of the Atlantic.I have been an avid reader and collector of S.F. since the early 60`s when , as a kid I was weaned off Superman comics and introduced to the real stuff ! The saying that we judge a book by its cover is very true for I had been put off trying Turtledove`s World War series for years despite knowing his pedigree. Although the first paperback edition of "In The Balance" started filling the shelves over here mid 1995 , I wouldn`t touch it.! WHY ? Ah! .Glad you asked.On the cover was a lurid, garishy coloured reptilian alien toting a "Buck Rodgers" type zappo ray-gun. The blurb on the back only added to my sense of repulsion from this novel and I hastily replaced it on the shelf.
