My experience with the Washington Capitals has been one of thrills and chills, win and losses. I have followed them since they entered the league in 1975, and have been a loyal fan ever since. The first 10 years or so, coupled with the previous 3 before this year were lean indeed. Almost losing them in the late 80's was also a difficult pill to swallow. I never thought Abe Pollin put the same effort into the team as he did with his other club, the Washington Bullets (Wizards).

There were years when we were probably a trade away from making it to the top, but he would not pull the trigger. Now that Ted Leonsis has taken over and built the club, along with George McPhee from the ground up with awesome talents like Alex Ovechkin and Alex Semin, the future is much brighter, and we finally might get to drink from the Stanley Cup...

All one has to do is look at the second half of last season to notice how much this team has grown. Bruce Boudreau took over in late November when the team was mired in a terrible slump and figured out how to motivate the team to go on an amazing run. Consider the fact that they went 11-2 down the stretch to make the playoffs and you realize the nucleus is there to win it all.

George McPhee, the general manager, was possibly on the hot seat last season if the Caps did not make the playoffs, but three shrewd moves he made before the trade deadline sparked them on their way. The acquisitions of Cristobal Huet, who goal tended most of the rest of season, as well as Sergei Federov and Matt Cooke infused a new passion into the team and helped it start its memorable run.

Those were not the only keys though. The Caps once porous defense came back from the dead behind future superstar Mike Green and his steady back line mate Shaone Morrison leading the D. Throw in there Team Canada and future superstar Karl Alzner, and you see the Caps will be set on the back line for a long time to come.

So can the Caps repeat that star studded run? Sure they can. Some important questions will have to be answered though. How will the team deal with the loss of Huet in nets? Will Jose Theodore give them the same quality between the pipes? Can Alexander Ovechkin possibly keep up his all world pace? Will the team get back many key performers who missed copious amounts of games last season and will they fit into Boudreau's system? Only time will tell my friends. Here is one guy though that says, don't bet against them!
