The Sims 2 is a great game! First, you get to create, and costume your character. There are a large amount of style choices to be made, from hair to eyes, to weight, and manner of dress.
Your Sims Character then begins his/her life and learns to interact with other people. As you learn goals, and accomplish tasks, you unlock items from the buy inventory.
Your Sim progresses through houses, friends, and careers, all in pursuit of the ultimate goal: learn and experience everything.
Sims 2 does not have the ability to have children, but you do get to meet some pretty green skinned people as you travel through the different houses. Yes, there are aliens in SimLand!
Progress from an untalented nobody to a successful person: make friends, make money, play checkers with a chicken.. everything is interactive and progressive.
All can be yours in Sims.

Note: In light of recent comments, I would also like to point out that this game has a fully interactive building menu. You can raze your home to the ground and start from scratch: with floor tiles, rugs, wallpaper, doors and windows of various designs, and furniture. This environment can be personalized down to the smallest detail. When finished, you Sim can fully interact with the new environment that you have created.
This game is worth a look.
