Great Value, surprising sound quality
Review of Sony STR DG520 AV receiver by birder

Advantages: connectible to VHS, DVD and analog TV
Disadvantages: need cable box for HD-TV , not HDMI cables

...of a long line of Sony audio video receivers. That said, It is excellent. It is connectible to television, DVD, VHS, and 5 more speaker channels. It performance specifications are impressive. It is head and shoulders better than any other audio video receiver in it's price range. There is a disappointment in Sonytown. This device has all the plethora of RCA type cables, which makes it possible to connect to a VHS recorder/player, a DVD recorder/player ...
...my cable television. I called Sony and was advised that I will have to use a cable tuner box which I will have to rent. for HD-TV. This receiver is equipped with 3 ports for the new breed of cable called HDMI or High definition Modular Interface but no HDMI cables were provided with the receiver. The HDMI cables cost $100 each. At $199 this receiver is beyond all fond expectations and I would strongly recommend it. Especially for its audio merits. ... Read review

The STR-DG520 5.1 channel A/V Receiver delivers the Full HD 1080 experience to your Home Theater System. This new 1080p A/V Receiver features HDMI "Pass-through" and 1080/24p capability, making it compatible with the latest HD sources (i.e. Blu-ray Disc Players, PLAYSTATION 3, etc.). Because no room is perfect, Sony's Digital Cinema Auto Calibration (and its supplied microphone) simplifies speaker set up and optimizes speaker performance with the push of one button in just 30 seconds. The STR-DG520 also features a DIGITAL MEDIA PORT (DMP connection, expanding the flexibility of the STR-DG520 to play back music from various audio sources (i.e. iPod and Walkman music players or PC) with one of the various accessories (sold separately).
