The must haves
On the other hand the new mobiles on the market has some features , which also became "must haves" for me like
UMTS support
Support for all types of GSM
Possibility to use a storage card (mini SD or memory stick etc)
integrated mp3 player
it has too look good
nice display
a gooood camera
possibility to store many ( i really mean like several hundreds) of sms messages. i so hated having to delete my sms messages as soon as i got 50 in my mailbox on my old mobile :/
So I started searching the perfect phone. And because i did not want to sign any 2 years contract just to have a new cell phone with suboptimal conditions ,i decided to buy the phone myself which made the price of the phone also an important criteria.
After having surfed long time in internet, having talked to many friends and colleagues and having hold many cell phones in my hand, Sony w880i was the one and only phone which fulfilled all my requirements.
UMTS in 9,4 Millimeters
I observed that UMTS mobiles were heavier and thicker compared to the others (2g or EDGE phones) and i was amazed how w880i can be so thin and still provide excellent standby(425 hours) time and talk time (3 hours UMTS, 6,5 hours GSM) All important 3G functionalities are provided: internet, video calls , multi media messaging, streaming....
Integrated Camera
It has a very nice 2MP camera with viewfinder and it is really very easy to take pictures. You can even blog them just after you shoot them! I guess they call it "picture blogging"
The quality of the pictures are really good, you can get them printed and would thin it would be from a big digital gadget.
You can also make videos to capture unexpected great moments when you are out with friends with this small 0-weight mobile phone.
Mp3 player
Excellent quality! You can use the fancy earphones to listen to your music or even the standard speakers on the phone would be enough to entertain you. The software is really professional : the Walkman music player can do everything any other iPod or good mp3 player is capable of. Shuffle tracks, make playlists, equalize, rewind etc etc Last but not least , when you hear a song you like but you don't know what it's called, ask TrackID (a software in the phone). Simply record a few seconds of the song and use TrackIID to send the music for recognition. In seconds, you'll have the name, artist and album sent to your phone. Of course it costs something and thats why i havent tired it yet :)
Flight mode
Many Sony Erisson mobiles have this nice feature. It gives you the chance to turn off the radio functionality so that it does not disturb the airplane and any other equipment like in hospital etc. You cannot make calls of course, but you can still use your toy to listen to music or to play games :)
Other stuff
The alarms are very helpful, i cant sleep or travel without my w880i anymore.
Outlook synch is working without problems so i carry my business calendar in my tiny small good looking w880i with me.
Java games work without problems
Bluetooth : working well with PCs , other Sony and Nokia phones until now
Price & points to ponder
I paid around 270 Euros in summer 2007 (red version) and i find it a cool deal for this design , funtionality and quality you get with w880.The only thing I should mention as not being so nice is the keypad. I mean the keys and buttons really look so fancy and shiny and nice but when it comes to typing long sms messages, you really have some problems in the first couple of weeks. When you get used to it, it is not a problem at all. Nevertheless, i would reconsider buying w880 if you have big thick fingers.... probably it is not optimal for big guys with huge hands :)
