Manufacturer's product description

A five megapixel, Super HAD CCD imager, 12X optical zoom lens and a large 2.5-inch LCD are just a few of the features on this model that are sure to please even the choosiest photo buff. With a focal length range of 36 - 432 millimeters (a 35mm equivalence) the DSC-H1 camera lets you frame distant objects with ease. Making the most of this telephoto reach, Sony's Super Steady Shot optical image stabilization feature counteracts camera-shake to ensure sharp images. This feature also benefits low-light photography by allowing the use of longer shutter speeds with reduced risk of image blur from camera-shake. Sony's Real Imaging Processor circuitry is incorporated in the model for better battery efficiency, more responsiveness and high quality movie taking, while seven preset scene modes allow quick selection of the best setting for specific shooting conditions. The camera also includes a five-area, multi-point auto focus to help you concentrate on the subject without mistakenly focusing on the background, as well as aperture/shutter priority and manual exposure modes for creative control of the image. For added convenience, the model has 32 MB of internal memory (30 MB of usable memory) and a Memory Stick flash media slot. PictBridge compatibility enables prints in a flash when the camera is connected to an enabled printer.

Disadvantages see VVVV

...Sony decided to up the ante this year and transform their line, entering the "ultra zoom" race with the release of a long-lens Cyber-shot digital camera. The resulting 5.1-megapixel Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 has a 12x optical zoom lens, equating to a 36-420mm variable focal range (35mm format), with image stabilization and conversion lens compatibility. Mark Weir, product manager for digital cameras and digital photo printers at Sony explained the ideology behind the H1, saying, "we think that by combining long zoom, high performance optical image stabilization and a 2.5 inch LCD, we'll have a very attractive combination of features set to what we see is a rapidly expanding part of the market." The SLR-shaped H1 does pack an attractive set of features: a full range of manual and automatic shooting modes, a large LCD screen with live... Read review

Very good camera.
Review of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 by saqif10 taken from ciao.co.uk

Advantages Not difficult to use, reliable.
Disadvantages Can be awkward to carry.

...I have owned this camera for rougly 2 years now and it has never failed me. The brand in my opninion speaks for itself. The huge screen allows one to capture exactly what is needed and by taking the photo in high resolution one can easily transfer it to a computer, either via usb or memory stick options, and then crop it to perfection. The 5.1 megapixels are to me very sufficient. The memory options can be expanded. And the ease of use is amazing as one's first impressions are that it is a very professional camera only to be used by professionals. But don't be fooled or intimidated, a few presses of the buttons and you are open to using it as a very simple point and shoot. One thing rarely mentioned about this camera is that the video options, although not excellent, do still exist and provided lighting is sufficient, along with a steady... Read review

Sony's First Superzoom
Review of Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H1 by ianux48 taken from ciao.co.uk

Advantages Very good Image quality, Excellent Build and ergonomics, Antishake system, very light for its size
Disadvantages Uses 2 XAA batteries and is a bit bulky

...I have been using the DSC-H1 for 3 months and i have found it great fun, I am very impressed, especially for the now discounted selling price. I got this camera primarily as a more portable alternative to my DSLR, of course the image quality is not as good, but allowing for the difference in cost it comes fairly close in some cases. The build quality is impressive and it feels comfortable in the hand, ergonomically its very weel designed and the very large LCD is both fast and bright, it can easily be seen in moderate sunlight. The antishake system works very well and really makes a difference in poor light. I have been very pleased with the shots so far, colour and exposure are spot on and the autofocus system is very reliable even in low light. Sony chose a 5.1 megapixel sensor and did not incorporate the usual Carl ziess lens... Read review
