Ownership... more...of its own sensor development and manufacture is one of Canon's most significant technology advantages, and has led to the development of a second generation 8.2 Megapixel APS-C size (22.5 x 15.0 mm) single-plate CMOS sensor, specifically designed and purpose built for the EOS 20D. Canon CMOS sensors have faster reading speeds, lower noise and significantly lower power consumption than conventional CCD sensors. High pixel density is made possible by the introduction of new high sensitivity 6.4µm square photo-diodes with an excellent S/N ratio. High-performance micro lenses positioned above each photo-diode increase the light reaching the photo sensing elements, enhancing high-ISO performance and improving image quality. An extremely high ISO 3200 setting is selectable to extend the camera's wide ISO 100-1600 speed range. A new on-chip noise elimination circuit amplifies the signal in slow-read steps to eradicate fixed pattern and random noise, while a 3-layer optical low-pass filter placed in front of the sensor reduces false color effects. The EOS 20D features an EF-S lens mount, which gives the camera a 1.6x multiplier effect to the focal length of lenses mounted to the camera. A lens with a 100mm focal length will therefore have an effective focal length of 160mm when fixed to the EOS 20D.
