The RCA TH 1101 1GB MP3 Player is, in my opinion, an excellent value! I purchased one of these several months ago and it is still going strong; it holds just enough space to keep me interested and has every function I want or need. It's also quite durable, having been dropped innumberable times (once into a sink full of soapy water!) and never once has it stopped working.
I use my MP3 player for three main purposes, all of which it does very well: Listening to music (often on shuffle), listening to audiobooks, and recording MP3 files of my own. I was surprised at the excellent audio clarity and the equally high quality recordings that it can make!
The basic controls are easy; turn it on and it begins to play. There are simple buttons to control volume, pause, skip forward, and skip backward. There's a key lock to keep you from accidentally pressing buttons when it's in your pocket or you are physically active.
More advanced functionality is found through use of the menus. I am STILL finding functions I didn't know it had! You can record (I haven't found a limit to how long a single recording can be, yet; I've recorded up to half an hour!), put your playlist on shuffle or repeat, even change the color of the monochrome screen.
There is an expansion slot to add more memory if you choose.
For an inexpensive option, I highly recommend the RCA TH 1101. It has all the functionality of a more expensive player, the quality of the audio and of recordings is high, and it can take a beating and keep going. If this one ever goes out on me, you can bet I'll get another like it.
A word of caution, however; it does not recharge it's own batteries off the USB drive of your computer, as many do. This takes a AAA battery; one battery lasts maybe 8 hours on average. I purchased an inexpensive battery charger and use rechargables; that way I'm not constantly burning through batteries, because this device does get a LOT of use!
