Manufacturer's product description
Digital Versatile Disc (DVD) is hot. And Pioneer's DV-525 player is a popular choice. With good reasons. For one, the 96KHz/24 bit digital output delivers superior-fidelity from DVD discs. For another, the DTS digital output means the ultimate in theater sound, along with a Resume Function that lets you stop a movie and then resume playback where you left off. You also have a Component Video Output that brings you enhanced picture quality on component-compatible TVs. An auto-gain level adjustment cuts the disc-jitters. And it has a good memory - the DV-525 recalls set-up conditions (language, subtitle, aspect ratio and mode) for up to 15 discs. When connected to a receiver or amplifier with a Dolby Digital or DTS decoder through either the optical or coaxial digital outputs, you can enjoy the phenomenal experience of video through five discrete full range channels, whether for stunning sound effects or crystal clear dialogue. 10-bit Video D/A Converter delivers faster video signal processing than conventional methods, minimizing digital artifacts for enhanced digital video quality. Twin-Wave Laser Pickup Equipped with a 650nm laser diode for playing DVDs and 780nm diode for playing CDs, Video CDs and CD-Rs. Bit-Rate Meter provides a display of the average bit-rate being used to decode the video from scene to scene, giving you an quantifiable indication of the effort put into the mastering process. Serious moviephiles will enjoy using it to compare transfers of various films. Multiple Viewing Angle Capability gives you the ability to select viewing from various camera angles on DVDs encoded with the feature. Currently it is seen mostly on informational productions. DVD A-B Repeat allows you to program a "start" and "end" to a DVD segment that you choose, and continuously repeat as you determine. It's great for trying to learn those old Clapton licks, or using with instructional videos.

Advantages great sound Disadvantages delayed forward and rewind
...Nowadays, you can find loads of good, moderately priced DVD players on the market from more or less every electronics manufacturer around. I had a look around before deciding on the PioneerDV-525. A major surprise I had is that the one I chose is one of the only DVD players around that can pass a true 96 khz signal while playing 96 khz / 24 bit DVDs. Nearly all other players down-convert this signal to 48 khz. When you combine this feature with an MSB link DAC it will create a nice budget-conscious CD transport and D/A converter.
Quite a problem, I think, is that it gets quite noisy when spinning the DVD and even more noisy when it is moving from track to track. Strangely enough the level of noise varies from DVD to DVD. Usually you won’t notice unless the movie has a quiet scene. Another disadvantage is the delay in moving forward...

...This player is outstanding it has converted me a mere woman to the benefits of DVD & suround sound TV.
I had always tolerated my husbands need for the best TV & audio equipment, but this got me watching James Bond, I hate James Bond, just for the effects and the picture quality.
We started with a Matsui DVD within a week the DVD player was faulty and exchanged. We then changed one DVD 7 times because it played most other DVD's ok we thought it was the DVD not the player. When the store got fed up of changing the DVD we took the DVD to a local TV & audio shop and asked them to check the DVD it played on all there DVD players.
The Matsui DVD player was returned again checked instore and found to be faulty again.
We paid the extra and got the PIONEERDV-525 it plays every DVD the picture quality is excellent as is the sound. Having...

Advantages Good sound and picture, no jumping, easy setup Disadvantages Not a lot for the price
...I bought the pioneerDv-525 about 6 months ago at bargain price of £169.
It took all of about 3 minutes to setup my DVD player with my television, then only another 5 minutes to set up the options and settings on-screen with a very user-friendly menu system.
The picture is superb and sound is very good especially through surround sound or even just on a Nicam TV.
The player is multi-regional and automatical sets itself to whatever region DVD is put in the machine.
The player hardly makes any of the whirring and vibrating noises often assoicated with lower-budget DVD players.
The remote control is just the right size and not to cluttered with buttons - the main buttons are all very easily accessed without fumbling around with the remote.
You can also play cd's, cd-r's and vcd's on the player with excellent sound quality...
