If bonuses like the Guide Plus+ program guide and dual-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) float your boat, you should be looking at tricked-out RPTVs like this one. Videophiles will be pleased to see the 5044C's three-line digital comb filter, which will cut down on artifacts when connected to sources through the S-video inputs. Component video is the best video connection from DVD players blessed with a corresponding output. Scan velocity modulation artificially sharpens the picture. This TV comes with a protective screen that also increases contrast. The Guide Plus+ program guide shows a grid of programs with a preview window for the one currently selected, and also allows one-touch recording of upcoming shows through VCRs equipped with VCR+. Dual-tuner picture-in-picture (PIP) lets you watch two programs at once, without using an external tuner from your VCR or cable box. Round back, you'll find all the jacks to integrate the 5044C into a home theater. There's also a set of A/V inputs on the side (including S-video), for quick connection of camcorders and video game consoles. Philips provides factory presets for video games, sports, movies and weak signals, and also throws in a custom slot that'll remember your personal settings. The remote has backlit volume, channel menu and surf buttons, and can control many brands of VCRs, DVD players, satellite receivers and cable boxes.
