Advantages: amazing movie Disadvantages: sex scene
One twisted story but an AMAZING movie! After seeing this, I didn't want to smell or put on perfumes. I imagined the ladies being killed just to perfect a perfume that could enslave the whole world. This is definitely not recommended for youngsters. Not just because of the killings, but with a scene where everyone except 2 persons were having sex! What a scene?!? I practically forwarded that part because I didn't want to sink it in my memory. But ... ...of the movie, was alright. His sense of smell was so intense that he could smell everything that he encounters. It's nice to have that ability but so sad to use it in a twisted way. Lesson learned in this movie is to be CONTENTED with the given blessings and DREAM BIG to STRIVE HARDER. ...

Advantages The acting, for the most part, is amazing. Disadvantages Its not free.
...Based on Patrick Süskind book and adapted into a movie by Tom Tykwer we see the story of a French orphan, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille-played by Ben Whishaw-who is on an elusive search to try and bottle human scent.
Jean-Baptiste, born to a fish monger, from the moment of his arrival to this plane is gifted with extraordinary nostrils which can lap up every scent and memorizes them. This being quite an uncommon gift, and Jean-Baptiste being the strange man that he is he takes to sniffing all manner of paraphernalia, from rats to a beautiful red heads hair, without discrimination. And as all men we soon see our anti-hero Monsieur Grenouille has come across an amazing scent, that of a woman. Unlike all men however Jean-Baptiste begins his search to bottle it and in this search he leaves behind him a trail of destruction wherever he travels...

Advantages Something different to watch, slightly entertaining. Disadvantages Bad plot/ storyline is constant and weak.
...The cast of the film include main actor Ben Whishaw who has starred in recent films such as Bright star, Brideshead Revisited. He dominates proceedings in this film. Not one of Dustin Hoffman's best roles playing Baldini who is the perfumer.
Plot Outline as stated on imdb website 'Jean-Baptiste Grenouille, born with a superior olfactory sense, creates the world's finest perfume. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he searches for the ultimate scent'.
An introduction scene is shown in a dungeon type prison where a male prisoner is taken and dragged by chains, publically humiliated and sentenced to punishment via a wooden beating and iron rods. The reason behind this is that at the end of the movie the same guy is in imaging himself as being sentenced and potentially going to die.

Manufacturer's product description
Author Patrick Suskind enjoys a career shrouded in Salinger-esque mystery. Suskind's best-selling novel PERFUME was coveted by Hollywood for many years, and finally makes it to the screen in this production helmed by Tom Tykwer (RUN LOLA RUN). The film stays remarkably faithful to the author's vision, perfectly summoning up the brooding ominousness of small-town life in 18th-century France, and getting the casting of its central character, Jean-Baptiste Grenouille (Ben Whishaw), exactly right. Grenouille is an orphan whose sense of smell is extraordinarily acute. He impresses master perfumer Baldini (Dustin Hoffman) enough to work for him, and this sets Grenouille off on an epic quest to find the perfect scent. When he discovers that killing young women and bottling their essence is the only way he can achieve his dream, Grenouille is soon a wanted man with multiple murders to his name. However, when it comes to making one last kill--namely the attractive redhead Laura (Rachel Hurd-Wood)--the young perfumer may have met his match in her overprotective father, Richis (Alan Rickman). Tykwer's film is an impressive achievement, not least because the subject of scent and the cinematic medium were always going to make uneasy bedfellows. Couple that with the weight of expectation caused by the millions of readers who have delighted in Suskind's words, and it needed a brave director to take on such a project. Whishaw is a revelation in his first major screen appearance, and Tykwer made a wise choice in bringing in some older heads (Rickman, Hoffman) to support the younger actor. Visually, the film is stunning, and cinematographer Frank Griebe clearly worked hard to bring Suskind and Tykwer's visions to life. But ultimately this is an ensemble piece, with cast and crew all pulling together to create a film that simmers with a hushed menace throughout.
