Slim, so serial and parallel ports lay flush to the system. The adapter delivers native serial and parallel signals, operating like a set of integrated ports. It is ideal for customers who must connect to serial or parallel devices and need a cable-free solution or require a native connection that cannot be achieved through USB-attach alternatives.
Printer Adapter allows your PCs, notebooks, laptops, and handheld PDA devices that support the USB specification to print to any parallel printer via the USB with up to 12 Mbps throughput - which is much faster than standard parallel port speeds. The cable provides true Plug and Play, as well as hot plugging capabilities. For further convenience, the adapter derives its operating power from the Universal Serial Bus itself, so no bulky external power supply needs to be taken along. And because it is a USB Specification compliant device, the cable supports energy-saving "suspend" and "resume" operations. converter that allows Centronics and RS-232 devices to communicate with each other. The unit is reversible enabling you to convert from serial to parallel or parallel to serial. Additionally, it also provides a DB-25 RS-232C (DCE) compatible connector, and a C-36 Centronics connector. The serial baud rate is from 1.2 to 115.2 kbps (selectable by DIP Switch). The unit supports both hardware and software (XON/XOFF) handshaking.
Cables Included: 1 x parallel adapter ( external )
Manufacturer's product description
The SC819 (9 Pin) is bi-directional serial to parallel cables designed to connect directly from the DB9 serial port of a computer to a parallel printer. Operating at serial data rates to 38.4 Kbps., the Smart serial to parallel cables requires no external power. The Smart Cable technology automatically adjusts itself for serial to parallel or parallel to serial conversion. External accessible dip switches are used to set other parameters such as baud rate, parity and work length.
Advantages Size, weight, design Disadvantages Battery life
...Being students, my brother and I each recently purchased this specific laptop computer. Basically, the little beast is amazing! It’s compact size and looks but additionally its very full specification made it the ideal laptop for us both. It easily and discretely fits into bags separating it from many other of the bulky average laptops. As a result of its size, the machine is pretty light making it an overall winner.
Its basic specification is as follows:
Display - 10.4" TFT
Hard Disk – 6GB
Memory – 64MB
Processor – Pentium II, 300MHz
Modem - Inbuilt 56K
Ports - Serial, Parallel, PS/2, Serial, Parallel, PS/2 Battery Li-ion AC Adapter world wide auto sensing AC
I have installed the necessary software and files on to it, and the 300MHz processor easily copes with my student demands. In addition to this, the 6GB hard disk...

...section of the case as well. Consequently, the screen shouldn't get broken while you are travelling, and the inflexible case ought to protect internal components and delicate electrical connections against the continual stresses of handling and transport.
There isn't enough room in the compact 1.4kg case for anything other than the hard disk - which is removable for easy repair or upgrading - so as usual the floppy drive is external. It connects via the notebook's USB port, but the Portege is supplied as standard with a small, 300g port replicator which has essentials on it that are missing from the machine itself, like parallel and serial interfaces, and it also sports an integrated 10/100 Ethernet adapter, making it potentially quite a useful piece of kit.
The designers have managed to squeeze a pair of Type II PC Cards into the Portege...

...What’s there to tell about the 3Com 56K External Modem? This was a purchase decision made by my companies Purchasing Department. They chose a standard then kept with it. A pretty good choice if I might add.
The installation is a snap. Open the box, rip all the contents out and put it all together. Everything from an extra phone cord, software and power adapter is included. You do need to purchase a serial to parallel cable though. The parallel end connects to the modem (24 pins) and the serial end (9-pins) connects to the back of your computer. Most people will chose to run the CD for the installation, but I do not. Why? I like to run the “Add/Remove Hardware Wizard”. Why do I use this method? It works. Every workstation I have attached this modem to continues to run perfectly with out any issues with the drivers Windows comes loaded...
