Manufacturer's product description
The DMRE50 supports DVD-RAM which offers the benefits of total flexibility and convenience. It's not simply VHS in DVD form, but a format that provides increased user access to programs, convenient playback and recording functions, all on a durable disc which offers large storage capacity. It's a format that delivers a host of exciting and meaningful benefits designed to meet consumers' demands and expectations in the digital age. This model allows users to record superb digital video onto both DVD-RAM and DVD-R discs. The ability to record/playback on both DVD-RAM and DVD-R media provides the best of both worlds: DVD-R for the highest compatibility, allowing users to playback recordings on virtually any DVD player; and DVD-RAM for re-writability and advanced functions such as Time Slip for chasing playback and simultaneous record/playback. DVD-RAM technology offers the perfect solution for recording and re-recording favorite programs - over a 100, 000 times on the same disc - and provides huge storage capacity of 4.7 to 9.6GB per disc. In EP mode, up to 12 hours (6 hours per side) recording time is available on a 9.4GB double-sided disc, while a 4.7GB DVD-R disc in EP mode offers 6 hours recording time. There is a choice of four recording modes or alternatively users can choose the FR mode which automatically selects the optimum recording time with the best picture quality taking into consideration the remaining space on disc. With Panasonic's unique Time Slip feature the recorder's Simultaneous Record and Play function enables the recording of one program and playback of another. The DMRE50 also provides a 16-programmed timer recording feature. Time Slip's Chasing Playback is another convenient function which enables users to watch a recording that has already started, from the beginning, as the unit continues to record to the end of the program. In addition to virtually unlimited re-write capability, the DMRE50 allows you to use your DVD recorder like a personal video recorder. Recording is instantaneous with the touch of one button. Unlike other formats, where disc space has to be found manually, DVD-RAM's random access enables the DMRE50 to search for blank sections on the discs and starts recording at the touch of a button. There are no more worries about mistakenly recording over existing programs. Direct Navigator mode provides fast access to recorded programs by displaying a list of programs recorded on a disc. Simply click on the desired program and it immediately starts - even as another program is being recorded at the same time. The quick playback feature enables recordings to be viewed at 1.3 time normal speed with the sound adjusted to remain audible whilst staying in sync with the visual image. In addition to recording new video content, the DMRE50 also allows consumers to transfer their favorite VHS tape recordings to space-saving discs. Personal movie libraries and family videos can be archived, preserved, and easily cataloged and accessed. When connected to home cinema components, the DMRE50 enables playback of multiple digital entertainment formats, including DVD video, music CDs, CD-R, CD-RW discs and MP3. Finding and viewing recorded material is fast and easy because there's no need to search, fast-forward or rewind. The DMRE50 also provides a major benefit to the video editing enthusiast. The Playlist function lets the user perform simple non-linear video editing - such as rearranging the order of scenes, skipping over unwanted scenes and creating custom playlists of favorite scenes on a disc.

I purchased the PanasonicDMR-E50 from Ebay priced £349 which was a massive drop in price as the same DVD recorder was being sold at the now defunct high street store Dixons for £549.
The DVD recorder arrived it had the traditional DVD recorder facilities as most others did. It recorded in the far preferable - format, and featured a time shift option should I need it (more information on both of those in a bit). I immediately started converting all my DVD's across to DVDR format.
I had got roughly 400 movies through my collection when I noticed that the machine was starting to muck about. I contacted the supplier who told me to go away in "short jerky movements". So I was left with one alternative, I must contact Panasonic. They asked me lots of questions and told me that I probably would not qualify under the warranty as I had...
