NOKIA 6300

Having always bought/used Nokia phones I am ashamed to say that my current cell is a Sony Ericsson (see other review of it!). However, I recently had to borrow a cell as I had left mine at home and I really felt as if I was coming home as the immediate feel of the Nokia 6300, despite is high-tech finish, is one of familiarity. Despite being a tad backward when it comes to electronics I barely needed coaching on using this lovely little cell.

The main menu options are chosen by pressing the central button in the middle of a metal square on the front of the cell. You then move to choose the particular function by pressing on the top/bottom/right/left sides of the selection "square" (Nokia calls this the navigation key) and your choice of option is then made by again pressing the button in the middle of it.

The menu options are, as always, very instinctive icons (you can choose just icons or icons with word explanation) and the sub-menus for each option present themselves clearly.

The selection "square" is flanked on either side by an upper blue back-lit button and below this on the left a green backlit button and on the right a red back-lit button. The blue buttons are for ,moving through the options of each menu while the red and green buttons are for making and ending calls. The lights look very futuristic and are, as it happens, very helpful if you are not in a well-lit environment.

There are additional bright blue lights embedded in each side edge of the cell which flash when a text message is received. A call arrival is signalled by the ringing tone you have chosen or, if in stealth mode, by the main screen flashing at you.

Although considered a fairly light cell, and it really is remarkably slim, it feels very solid and my friend commented that fairly rough treatment of it hadn't generated any faults.

The only downside, mentioned in other reviews, is the relatively short duration of talk-time.

The major upside is the quality of the pictures - because the screen occupies almost 2/3rds of one side you really get a sense of the picture you are taking and the ability to zoom in on a subject is great. The resulting picture is very good and readily transferable to a pc without much loss of picture quality - there will soon be pics of my dog on his website taken with this camera, they are just that good!

Others have written about the full functionality of this cell, but all I can say is that it is a delight to use and very very slim.
