Nintendo Wii

Nintendo Wii

Featuring a compact design that makes it a natural addition to any television setup, the Wii console can be displayed either vertically or horizontally. The Wii is backward... more...compatible to all Nintendo GameCube games and includes four ports for controllers and two slots for memory cards. A single self-loading media bay plays single- or double-layered 12-cm optical discs for the Wii console, as well as 8-cm Nintendo GameCube discs. Input: Four Wii Remotes can communicate with Wii, which features a bay for an SD memory card. Output: An AV Multi-output port for component, composite or S-video. The Wii console communicates wirelessly with the Internet via wireless or a Wii LAN adaptor. Wii also can connect wirelessly with Nintendo DS.

My husband and I stood in line on the release date to get this console as soon as it went on sale! It's my favorite Nintendo system to date, now.

With the unique "Wii-mote" interface, users often have to get up and move around to interact with the games. This is especially noticeable on games such as Wii Sports, which is included in the original bundle. It's very intuitive; both my 8-year-old niece and my 80-year-old grandma were able to play within a few minutes of picking up the controller!

Other games require attachments such as the nunchuck or the classic controller, both of which are easy to find and are relatively inexpensive. You can also use Gamecube controllers with the Wii, which is nice for games such as Super Smash Brothers Melee, in which the controls are the same as the Gamecube version.

The Wii has the capability to download classic games, which are reasonably priced. It also has various "channels" of content, such as weather, news, an "everybody votes" poll game, and other fun activities, all for free.

Drawbacks: The Wii only comes with one controller to start. I wish it had at least two. Wii-motes were scarce in the beginning. And the Wii-motes eat batteries like candy, so be prepared to buy a good set of rechargeable ones! Also, the Wii does not have HD-compatibility, which was a disappointment, since we have an HDTV.
