The 18-200mm has turned out to be an excellent investment and is now constantly attached to my Nikon D40x. Here's a list of things l like about it.
Pros
- on the whole, excellent picture quality - 11.1X optical zoom, that's a lot - excellent VR (image stabilisation) which is useful for being zoomed in and handheld shots in low light - fast and silent auto-focus - well built solid, reliable - I haven't experienced lens-creep
Cons
- heavy. The Nikon D40x with the 18-55mm is weightless. With the 18-200mm, it's a pain to carry around all day. - likes light. Low light when zoomed in sends the light-meter hayware doing dusk shots. To get around this I just take a shot and review it on the display, or switch to raw to be able to fix the image afterwards. - loses some sharpness at long focal lengths.
Conclusion
I'm really happy to have bought this lens, it would recommend it to anyone. If you're considering a Nikon, I urge you to forget buying one with the 18-55mm lens and get one with more zoom.
Also, whichever lens you buy, VR is just terrific and worth the extra cost.

Consider also buying a clear lens filter. I bought one from Hoya and will use it for the more uncontrolled situations e.g. beach vacations.
