Nikon D40
Review of Nikon D40 by anewberry

Advantages: Lightweight, Great Capture
Disadvantages: Built in flash

I purchased the Nikon D40 in June of 2007. It is by far the most used camera in my fleet. Lightweight - yet perfectly capable of capturing anything! I use it for portraits, wedding photography, candids, landscapes, macro - name it. The built in flash works in a pinch, but I prefer the SB-600 Speedlight attached for anything that requires a flash. If you are looking into purchasing a nice lightweight, high performance digital SLR this is your best ...
...wouldn't bother buying anything more unless you could afford the Nikon D200, which in my opinion is the only camera that is a step up and worth the money. Great value for beginners, but impressive enough for the novice. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who loves photography. ... Read review

A great bargain entry level SLR
Review of Nikon D40 by klashar

Advantages: Inexpensive, great pictures, light, more light sensitive than the D60 / D40x
Disadvantages: 6MP, only AFS lenses, not many hard buttons.

The Nikon D40 is an entry level SLR camera now replaced by the Nikon 60 orginally competing with models such as the Pentax K100D and Canon Rebel Xti. Pentax have since released the Canon Rebel Xsi , Pentax the K100D Super and Nikon first the D40x and now the D60. This is one of the best cameras I have used, ever! I purchased because my son is into fast sports and to use a regular camera would not catch the action. This cameras shutter speed and ease of use is absolutely awesome. There is a bad side, you need the extra lens to capture very close up shots, but after using it for about 6 months I can see why it got such great reviews from CNET and other sites. You will not be disappointed.
