Advantages: Lightweight, Great Capture

...I purchased the Nikon D40 in June of 2007. It is by far the most used camera in my fleet. Lightweight - yet perfectly capable of capturing anything! I use it for portraits, wedding photography, candids, landscapes, macro - name it. The built in flash works in a pinch, but I prefer the SB-600 Speedlight attached for anything that requires a flash. If you are looking into purchasing a nice lightweight, high performance digital SLR this is your best bet. Less expensive then the other Nikon options with just as much performance. I wouldn't bother buying anything more unless you could afford the Nikon D200, which in my opinion is the only camera that is a step up and worth the money. Great value for beginners, but impressive enough for the novice. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone who loves photography.... Read review

Excellent entry level Digital SLR

Disadvantages: Limited use of lenses, no anti-shake (VR) built in

...could be the perfect camera for you. The Nikon D40x is my first digital SLR and the fourth digital camera that I have owned. I'd call myself an ambitioned amateur photographer and having two small kids, we probably shoot 50-200 photos a week. I also did a fair bit of photography with older analogue cameras. To help me decide which camera to buy I read reviews on 'Steve's Digicams', Ken Rockwell's site, 'dpreview.com' and also 'Ciao.co.uk'. In the end I narrowed my options down to two cameras, the Nikon D40x and the Pentax K10d. Two things made me decide to buy the Nikon D40x namely, Ken Rockwell's write up on it and going to a camera shop and holding both cameras. The Nikon felt small and weightless compared to the Pentax and we felt that it was so heavy that we - particularly my wife - probably wouldn't use it as much. Don't get me wrong... Read review

Advantages: The Nikon D80 offers a number of features
Disadvantages: No Disadvantages

....Except for the 5D and EOS-1DS MKII pro models, Canon's digital SLR legacy is traceable from the D60 up through the 10D, 350/400D, 20D and 30D - lots of heritage but little else that's new except that wonderful Digic II processor. Nikon digitals, by contrast, had been bringing up the rear in recent years, but finally woke itself up with the D70, following on with a series of new designs for the D50, D200 and then this D80. When you add Nikon's cornucopia of high quality lenses to the mix, it's hard to deny that Nikon has taken its turn to spank Canon. The consumer is the winner. Even the non-Nikon choices I've panned are not really bad - they're just not up to the standards being set by Nikon. I tested the D80 during two weeks of active shooting in India and in several small towns in India. The first thing I noticed and relished was the light weight... Read review
