Manufacturer's product description
The NAD S400 is a top-performance, easy-to-use FM tuner with all of the sensitivity needed to pull in distant stations and all of the selectivity required to separate closely-spaced signals in urban areas. Its roster of useful, real- world features includes two independent, jointly-usable inputs for regular and cable reception. At a time when FM tuners have been offering increasingly mediocre performance with increasingly complex features of marginal usefulness, NAD as usual goes the other way with a tuner of superb performance and easy-to-use features of real value. If you value FM reception, and use it to find and tape material you might never come across otherwise, the S400 offers everything you need for maximum enjoyment and maximum utility. The S400's design begins with dual antenna inputs, each equipped with a fully independent, low- noise, dual-gate MOSFET RF amplifier. This unusual arrangement avoids any chance of interference between inputs, and provides invaluable convenience for anyone using two antennas oriented for different signal directions, or a regular antenna plus a cable system. Triple IF filtering offers user-selectable Wide/Narrow bandwidth. This feature offers best-of-both worlds performance, with maximum quieting from weak signals and maximum audio quality from strong, closely-spaced ones. The S400 also offers two other advanced circuit elements: a sophisticated, highly effective implementation of the critical 19 kHz pilot-tone filter, and separate, independently regulated power supplies for analog audio, RF, and digital-logic circuits. And for best results with very weak and/or noisy stereo signals, it incorporates a user-selectable "blend" control that permits quieting while still preserving a substantial stereo image. The S400's digital amenities include the usual memory presets (30 of them) that the user can program to recall favorite stations. But highly unusual is that each of the tuner's presets store not just a station by name (using the programable 8-character display input) but also the selected antenna input, IF-mode setting (Wide or Narrow), and mono or stereo decoding status. The S400 also provides remote control, plus NAD Link to operate it with other NAD components that are similarly equipped.
