Interpol are a rock/pop outfit that makes mostly alternative music with a usually downbeat and depressing sound. That's just fine, though, because I love their music. They can be likened to a very modern Joy Division, or a more depressing Franz Ferdinand (my favorite band). Currently they have three albums: Turn On The Bright Lights, Antics, and Our Love to Admire.

Their lyrics are often creative and inspiring, using combinations of words rarely used. While they don't always have meaning to the words used, the feeling is told mainly through the music they've arranged and the overall atmosphere. They can uplift you and inspire you to work harder in your love ("Slow Hands"), or they can make you feel anxious ("The Heinrich Maneuver"). Every so often they can get you rousing mad ("Mammoth").

Their videos often have a very creative touch to them, with one of their videos featuring a very creepy puppet miming the song "Evil" around a crash site, with hospital personnel around him. It's very disconcerting and weird. Not sure why they chose that. Their Heinrich Maneuever video is a slow motion look at a chain of people and their relationships while they're walking down a busy street and ends with a woman getting hit by a bus. It didn't show it, of course.

Interpol are a very varied band that have a variety of different songs that fit a range of moods. They're a much lesser known band than many others out there, and because of this you can generally get away with paying less for their concert tickets and merchandise, though they have been steadily creeping up in popularity lately.

Their greatest cd at the moment is arguably Antics, as it's spawned the most hits and it's the most creatively diverse album they've created in their career. Notable tracks off Antics include:

"Evil"
"PDA"
"Slow Hands"
"Not Even Jail"
"NARC"

If you're a fan of Joy Division, The Pixies, or Franz Ferdinand, give them a listen. They won't be everyone's cup of tea, but if you like what you hear, remember you have three CDs worth of material to go with!
