Griffin iTrip Mini for iPod mini Digital player FM transmitter

Griffin iTrip Mini for iPod mini Digital player FM transmitter

If you have an iPod mini, you need an iTrip mini. The iTrip mini FM transmitter lets you play your iPod mini's music wirelessly through any FM radio - in your car, on the road,... more...even at home through your stereo. The iTrip mini was designed exclusively for the iPod mini. Its form factor matches perfectly all the curves and lines of the iPod mini. It sounds even sweeter. iTrip mini gives you the best possible performance because you can choose any empty station from 87.7 to 107.9. Best of all you choose and change your iTrip mini stations directly from the iPod mini itself. The iTrip mini does NOT need batteries. It receives a tiny amount of power directly from the iPod mini - saving you from wasting hundreds of batteries a year. That's good news for the planet and even better news for your wallet.

When I first got my iPod mini, the first thing I wanted to do was use it in my car. My stereo doesn't have an adapter, so I couldn't plug into my mini. I had to figure out a different way to listen to my iPod over my car speakers, and the Griffin iTrip was the solution.

I ordered mine from Amazon and when it arrived, I was really excited to test it out.

In the box: the FM transmitter, installation CD, and a instructional booklet. What was really cool was that they packaged it similarly to how the iPod mini was packaged.

Design-wise, the transmitter looks really cool. It attaches to the top of the iPod and looks seamless when attached. It's white and has a light that turns on when it's working.

You have to have a computer to get the fm transmitter to work on the iPod. Just like you need a computer to get songs onto your iPod. That is basically what you are doing, except you are putting small data files onto your iPod. The small data files are the radio station frequencies. You can load all of them or just the ones you know you'll use. This process is really simple though and very well explained in the instructions.

Once the iPod is ready, you put on the iTrip, and start playing your iPod. It doesn't have an on/off switch, it turns on and off automatically. Then you adjust your radio to the station that you want to use. You obviously cannot use a station that is in use by a local radio station, because their signal is too strong. The iTrip has a default setting, but you can change which station you want to use easily. And it's best to use a frequency that isn't "close" to a radio station.

I don't have the mini anymore, but from what I remember, all you do is make the the iTrip is on, then find the radio frequency you want to use on your iPod (it's like picking out a song), change the radio to the same frequency, play the file and pause/stop halfway through. The light on the iTrip will blink and which lets you know the frequency is set. Then go to your music library and pick a song. It should start playing over your radio.

The iTrip was really handy during long road trips as it works best when you can't pick up a radio station. This was the downfall of it. Because it works by sending a signal over the airwaves, if you live in a larger city, then it may not work as well for you. The iTrip uses a large range of frequencies, so I had success with using those on the very "edges". But I didn't use it much for everyday because it could get static sounding. Also, it did not charge the iPod which would have been a nice feature. But because there were no cords, you could pretty much put your iPod anywhere to try to improve reception. This was designed for the Mini only, which limits its usefulness if you upgrade.

All in all, I was glad to have it. You won't get CD quality out of it, but it was a pretty good substitute. If I still had my Mini, I'd still be using it.
