GPS Systems have become more and more popular to own these days. With the permanently installed systems costing upwards of 1000 dollars, many people, including me, have turned to "portable" GPS systems. I bought the Garmin nuvi 260 from Best Buy for 275 dollars. I had read good things about it, and was going to choose between this model and a TomTom model. The 260 happened to be on sale, so I selected it.

This was the first GPS system I have ever purchased. I hooked it up in my Jeep Commander and typed in the address to my house to test it out. The monitor on the unit is a little over 3 inches, I think the box said 3.5 inches. The unit features a touch screen, and I immediately like using it. The buttons are not overly sensitive, they are just about where I'd like them. After selecting my route, I notice that these things tell you how long it will take to get there. I found that to be interesting. Before each turn, a voice announces what you will do next. That is nice, because you can actually keep your eyes where they belong (on the road) and still get good instructions. The voice does get a little annoying after a while though!

I used to use Mapquest a lot. Not anymore. I find the GPS particularly useful when I want to find the best way to get from point A to Point B. It calculates the shortest route for you. You can also pick out roads you want to exclude, and it will re-route your course. Also, I love to be able to search for places to eat and gas stations when I am in an unfamiliar area. That is very convenient. You also have the ability to view JPEG photos on this thing, although I never use that feature.

There are a few things I find bad about this unit. The first is sometimes the lady announces the turns without enough time to make them. That is very annoying! Another thing I dislike is the points of interest are kind of baron. They are missing some very popular and famous places.

All in all, I think the Nuvi 260 from Garmin is an excellent investment. I would recommend it to all.
