We purchased this air conditioning unit approximately one month ago. Although we paid close to $300.00 for it, a central air system was going to cost $2000.00 plus. It was purchased at a local department store. We live in a small house of about 1,000 square feet. This unit works efficiently and sufficiently to keep the main room of the house pleasantly cool.
It measures approximately 20" high by 14" wide. The depth of it is about 23 inches but it is a window unit and only about two inches of it is actually in the room. It sits almost flush with the window sill. The cord is long enough that we could put the unit in the window we wanted to and then plug it in on another wall. The window is actually taller than the unit but we had a friend build a top piece that reinforces the unit and also keeps outside air outside!
There are three fans speeds: Cool/Fan/Heat. So far we have only used it for the COOL setting. There is a Direction control on the front vents so you can adjust the position the cool air flows into the room. The filter slides right out which will be great when it comes time to change it. It also has a remote control. We have tried it out and it works fine. But I put it away. The room is so small and we have enough remotes already.
There is an auto-cool feature as well as a 24 hour timer on it. We have used this on very hot days when we have gone out so that the A/C clicks on prior to us getting home. It works great! I also like this feature for those days when it just never seems to cool off. It's spring time in Colorado. The weather is so strange here anyhow. It can be 85 one day, which is VERY hot for Colorado, and then snow the next. On those hot days, the house stays uncomfortably warm. Prior to purchasing this unit, we had to open doors and windows. But then bugs flew in. This is so much better!
It's EnergyStar efficient. It seems like most appliances are these days. We have used the A/C several times this past month and just received the monthly bill. There is actually no difference this month.
We have fans in each of the bedrooms. But we all sleep with our bedroom doors closed. This little unit starts the process by cooling the living room. Then turned off at night so that if needed, we use the fans. It runs quietly, it cools efficiently, the price was right for what we got, it doesn't cost more to run it.
My family is pleased with our purchase. I would recommend this unit to anyone who doesn't want to pay a fortune for central air and who wants to keep their living space cool.
**As a follow-up to this review, two days ago it was hot. Not hot enough to turn on the A/C, or so I thought. We opened up the windows and back door. I went out to check on the garden and noticed a "buzzing" sound in the den that opens out into the yard. On further investigation and with my son's help, we discovered a HUGE bumblebee about the size of a small hummingbird. We opened the door leading to the outside all the way. Waited for the bee to leave. Immediately shut the door. Turned on the A/C. One hour of cooling and the house was fine. I still believe this was a great investment.
