late 1950's and early 60's, is The Brothers Four. In 1956, a year before the Kingston Trio released their first album, a group of clean cut, All-American, fraternity brothers at the University of Washington, began performing in the Seattle Area. They started playing at gatherings at their fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta, then at wider campus events and sing-alongs. They did not fit into the mold of protest signers, they sang the music because they loved it. Their mix of traditional folk, novelty songs and romantic ballads captured audiences all around. Soon to be known as The Brothers Four, the group of Bob Flick, Mike Kirkland, John Paine and Dick Foley were soon selling out local folk joints like the Colony Club in Seattle. They performed in front of enthusiastic crowds; honing their performing skills to become consummate entertainers. They were later drawn to the folk music mecca of San Francisco's hungry I, and thento New York, where they landed a recording deal with Columbia Records. They were an immediate success with their first single "Greenfields", which began a career that has spanned five decades, multiple chart records, and countless concerts and personal appearances. The Brothers Four were among the first folk groups to play the American college circuit and they have since brought their unique singing style, wit and warmth to appreciative audiences around the world. Through time and personnel changes, The Brothers Four and their music remain as vibrant and entertaining as ever. With interviews, performance footage and rare archival footage, this DVD offers an exceptional glimpse into the life and times of the men and the music that are The Brothers Four.
quartet that gives John Singleton's film a razor's edge of redemption. It's a thin edge, to be sure, because while Singleton's urban Western pays homage to the Blaxpoitation films of the '70s (as he did with his remake ofShaft), it walks a fine line of credibility with a mythic vengeance plot (recalling John Wayne's 1965 hitThe Sons of Katie Elder) that endorses violence as the last resort of a family under siege. When a saintly foster mother (Fionnula Flanagan) is gunned down in a convenience store, her only adopted sons (two white, two black, played respectively by Mark Wahlberg, Garrett Hedlund, Tyrese Gibson and Andre Benjamin) go after the killers, only to discover that their mother's death was not a random event. As they uncover a sticky web of criminal activity involving a local kingpin (Chiwitel Ejiofor), the character-driven plot races toward an inevitable showdown, with ex-con Wahlberg leading the way. Making excellent use of blue collar locations in Detroit, Singleton keeps the action moving fast enough that the film's lack of realism is easily ignored, and the well-drawn characters (including Terrence Howard as a tenacious detective) lend emotional dimension to an otherwise familiar revenge scenario.Four Brothersis manipulative, but it's filled with grace notes of rugged working-class humanity, and it definitely holds your attention.--Jeff Shannon

a story about four brothers that came from different parents. they were adopted by Evelyn Mercer, an old lady that was shot in a convenience store and died. Boby Mercer (Mark Wahlberg), Angel (Tyrese Gibson), Jeremiah IAndre Benjamin), and Jack (Garrett Hedlund) all came back to Detroit when the news that their adpoting mother was shot dead. They came back to burry their mom... and her killer. Its a hard packed action with a little drama and revenge. ... ...which makes citizens put the law into their own hands. The picture also depicts lesson on brotherhood and family ties that happens to be very important among siblings. Different blood, same values yet everyone is expressively unique with their characteristics and personality which is very much shown in this movie. ...

...shot at a convenience store...the four brothers reunite and has sworn to find the person responsible for the death of their mother. As they went on from every places they could think of that would link to the death of their mom, they found out that there's more to it than meets the eye. They found out that their mom is really the target. This movie did not skip violence at all. There's a lot of gun shots from each other and shooting of houses. Lots ...

I watched this movie just today.... Many of my friends told me this was a great movie - i WASN'T interested because the story line itself sounded so very cliched... - 4 brothers avenged their mom's death... I've lots of such movies - no thank you....
But have I ??? No i guess not - it was one one helluva movie - really stylish but not the kinda loud stupid action movie you think it is... I guess no one but John Singleton could have pulled it off...
... ...murdered - but even that was very subtle, with the actual killing not shown to the viewers... Though it has a lot of violence and bloodshed, and has its plot revolving around revenge, we do get some solid performances from the well picked cast...
The shootout scene in the movie is by far one of the best action sequences i've seen in quite some time - unbelievable yet possible....
To any one with a taste for action, go for it - you won't be disappointed... ...

Four Brothers is intentionally modeled after John "The Duke" Wayne's 1965 western fraternal fable The Sons of Katie Elder. Singleton's frenetic exposition tells the tale about adoptive brothers (two sets of white and black siblings) who return home to bury their beloved "stand-in" mother--the patient and loving woman responsible for raising them when they were considered societal throwaway casualties. Unfortunately, 62-year old Evelyn Mercer (Fionnula ... ...of his brothers' influence.
Four Brothers was probably meant to be an action-oriented piece that embraced the concept of redemption as its soulful core. Singleton knows how to accentuate the flourishes of an actioner and relies on the stand-by premise of outrageous shootouts and exaggerated car chases in an awkward effort to capture the essence of his fiery flick. However, the moviemaker fails to let the film resonate with genuine emotional depth ...

Advantages Great Casting, Great Plot Disadvantages Bad Movie
...My husband and I bought this movie after both of us agreeing that it could have some potential. (For us to agree on a movie is a monumental occassion).
The opening scenes were good and the film got off to a good start but after the first 10 minutes it all went downhill.
The cast of the fourbrothers work great together and the story had the plotline for a briliant movie but the poor directing and links between scenes made this long and boring.
There is pleny of violence and some blood and guts and some of the stunts and special effects made the move almost bearable to sit through but nothing holds it all together and in the end we were both bored just wishing for it to end.
Not one for my recommended play list.

Advantages Its a pacey and gritty film and has its moments Disadvantages Nothing special
...This film is a tricky one. It has peaks and troughs throughout it, with some parts demonstrating the relationship between the four central characters very well and actually manage to develop them slightly. On the other hand, there is plenty gun-heavy bravado when it is not really necessary.
Unfortunately, the film takes a few cliché twists which degrade its credibility. The fourbrothers (Mark Wahlberg, Tyrese Gibson etc.) in question set out to avenge the shooting of their adoptive mother during a liquor store robbery. From here the film moves at quite a fast pace and uses the holiday season as a backdrop for a feeling of family and unity but gets stuck in following a typical movie formula. The plot twists are predictable most of the time and probably won't inspire you to any great degree.
There are plenty of adrenaline fuelled...

Manufacturer's product description
When their beloved foster mother is killed in a holdup, four tough brothers reunite in their old Detroit neighborhood with revenge on their minds. Mark Wahlberg plays the brawl-hungry leader, Bobby. His brother, Angel (Tyrese Gibson), is a rowdy sailor with a high-strung Latina girlfriend (Sofi Vergara). Garrett Hedlun plays the young rock & roller of the clan. And Outkast's Andre 3000 is the family man whose tenuous mob connection may link him to the killers. Director John Singleton ably blends his action skills (SHAFT, 2 FAST 2 FURIOUS) and his gift for capturing the warm heart at the center of violent urban masculinity (BABY BOY, BOYZ N THE HOOD) to create a cooked-to-perfection gangsta stew. A soundtrack jammed with 1970s Motown classics roots everything firmly in the gritty tradition of the best of that decade's blaxploitation and urban revenge thrillers. Action highlights include a skidding car chase through snowy streets, some rough street hockey, and a bullet-intensive neighborhood shoot-out. With its talented, likeable cast, clever plotting, and sharp dialogue, this is a real crowd-pleaser that nonetheless doesn't shy away from depictions of street violence. There's not an ounce of fat on it--no extraneous romance, and no going "straight" at the end. Terrence Howard (HUSTLE & FLOW) is the well-meaning but ineffectual detective who tries to put a lid on the boys' rebelliousness. The spirits of Dirty Harry and Charles Bronson should be proud, and action fans will be well pleased.
