''I love facebook!''

This is a comment you may come across a lot when asking people about facebook.com - people who are members tend to love the site and get a bit addicted to it. So what is it and what makes people all over the world addicted to this site?

Facebook:
It is a social network site the same as myspace or bebo, where by social network I mean a site that allows you to communicate and share your life with your friends, family and colleagues. It is also not that unlike a blog as users record the events in there life to by adding things like photo albums or general information on themselves.

Sign me up!
To sign up you just need to have an email address and set yourself a password. On the front homepage the link is there to sign up and this literally takes a minute or two. Once you've done this you are ready to set up your own personal profile! A plus is it's all free!! Yippee!

How do I do that?
Facebook is aptly named because people can 'view' your face on there and see who you are - hence my title!
To set up you can go with the basic style such as just your name and sex or you could go on the full blown route by adding your birthday, your relationship status, your personal interests, your job title and so much more! The good thing with it all is that it is your decision how much information you decide to give or not. The one thing I would say though is that if you are signing up to get in contact with old friends, family or colleagues etc, then it is definitely best to add a picture - after all there is apparently now nearly 100 million users!! So if you have a name the same as anybody else then it's likely old friends might struggle to find out which one is you in a list the size of themselves without a picture!

What can you do on there?
Well like I say it's a point of contact of people who may have lost touch or not seen each other in years - this is a good way to find out what they're up to, catch up etc and also a great site for staying connected to friends who you may not see that often just due to work or general life so a quick message to keep in touch will suffice! You can simply send them a personal private message or if it's just a quick 'hi!' then you can write on the person's 'wall' which is a mesaage board that everyone else can see too.
Then there are all the applications you can add to your profile which can be as simple as that good old trusty photo album such as a special occasion you want to let your friends and family see or maybe games that you can then play with other users. The possibilities are endless!

How do I find friends?
Well you probably know the names of your friends so you can literally just type in their name and it will bring up everybody by that name - however if your friend has a name that is quite common then it may be difficult to find. Facebook realises this and so when searching it will make it relevant to you as such by bringing up people in the same country first or those users who maybe already have a friend listed the same as one of your existing friends as more than likely you are looking for a mutual friend. Failing that you can search by whats known as networks - this is where users have joined a network that is relevant to them such as the city in which the live or company they work for and this would obviously make it easier if you knew where your friend lived!
Once you have found the person you are looking for then you can click on the button next to their picture which says 'add as friend'. They will then receive an email asking them to confirm that they know you and if they accept the friendship you can then see their profile and communicate with them!

Bad points:
Of course there are always bad points to everything in life and one thing I would say is that be aware of what you are or are not putting on facebook. If you have an open profile which means anyone can see your profile without having to be a friend, then make sure you don't display such things as home address and personal phone numbers as this could lead to people who are not so nice taking advantage. However you can choose to have a closed profile so that only people who you have accepted as a friend can view your main profile and that is the safer option to take overall!

Overall opinion:
I think that facebook is a great website and a great idea that has proved it's worth by how many members it has! It is fun, keeps you in touch with others and you can use it as much or as little as you want without having to worry that your membership will be cancelled. I would say to anyone to have a look and see what you think - if you don't like it then you can always cancel your membership!
Also for anyone older out there who thinks it not a site for them then think again! Facebook unlike myspace or bebo is geared towards everyone so users feel more comfortable without feeling like they are out of place on here!

A great site and one of my favourites!
