Manufacturer's product description
The Vigor2200We combines the Internet sharing/connectivity features of the Vigor2200 range with a Wireless Access Point - a central 'hub' for all wireless-equipped PCs to communicate with each other, and the Internet (Ethernet 802.11b compliant). This means that you can set up a wireless office where all PCs have LAN and Internet connectivity. The 802.11b standard provides for communication over a distance of up to 200M from the base in ideal conditions (this is affected by environment and obstructions). A built-in 4-port Ethernet switch (10/100BaseT autosensing) allows for regular wired Ethernet connections. Although the Vigor2200We has a built-in broadband Ethernet interface as well as its routing, VPN and security functions, you don't have to use them! The Vigor2200We will work fine as a stand-alone wireless access point, simply to act as a central hub to connect wired and wireless-equipped PCs to an existing LAN, or to existing routers. As well as acting a the central point for your LAN, the Vigor2200We can be set into 'station mode' whereby it acts as a satellite to another central wireless router, for example to run a nearly satellite office where running cables would be inconvenient. The 10/100BaseT switch can then support local wired PCs, which the router communicates with the remote base router over the Wireless interface. The Vigor2200We has a real-time clock, which can update itself from your browser or an Internet time server (NTP) when it boots. This enables you to schedule the router to dial-up your ISP via ISDN (2200Wplus only) at a preset time, but also to restrict Internet access to certain hours so that the router will only allow Internet or dial-in access at certain times (e.g. office hours). The Vigor2200We's broadband Ethernet interface is particularly ideal for cable modem services from NTL and Telewest BlueYonder - your cable modem connects straight in, giving all of your LAN users shared Internet access with added security. As well as cable modems, you can connect the Vigor's broadband interface to any other Ethernet network to provide you with wireless facilities. The Vigor2200We's VPN (Virtual Private Networking) facility enables you to connect two remote LANs (e.g. head office and branch office) to each other or a Teleworker to office, using the Internet. A secure 'tunnel' is established and as you are making use of your existing Internet connection, there are no long distance phone charges or huge leased line costs typical of LAN links. Multiple VPN links can be supported simultaneously including a mixture of remote LANs and individual teleworkers connected to their ISP (via dialup or broadband).
