Advantages: Lots of lovely versions of some Porter Classics Disadvantages: A couple of bad notes, not for people who don't like Cole Porter songs
It is the rare occasion that finds me buying a movie soundtrack. The main reason for this is that many have some silly background music tracks added to them that frankly, aren't all that fantastic musically, and were probably added just to have enough sound-bites to justify putting out an album. Oh, sure, the soundtrack for "Good Morning Vietnam" is one exception - but who doesn't enjoy hearing Robin Williams doing his run-off-at-the-mouth shtick ... ...is this CD - the soundtrack for De-Lovely. You see, from the moment I saw this movie, I knew I was going to buy the soundtrack. I've always loved Cole Porter songs, and this was a way to get a nice collection while also getting an interesting combination of artists performing them. Here's what I think of this CD.
First of all, the line-up of artists performing these tunes is a real mixed bag - well known singers, along with lesser known ones, along ...

Advantages Wonderful music, glorious costume drama, superb acting. Disadvantages Not a full biopic.
...Advertised as "an impressionistic musical biography", De-lovely is a biopic of the celebrated songwriter Cole Porter. Celebrity biographies have long been popular theme for films and this is not the first time Cole Porter has been the subject. He was still of course alive for the first, the 1946 film “Night and Day”. Film biographies are now referred to by the snappier terminology of biopics. The 2005,” De-Lovely” is not as sentimental or as flattering to Porter as “Night and Day” was but it is as elegant and the musical performances more polished.
There is even a cheeky scene showing De-Lovely’s Porter watching Night and Day's Porte (Cary Grant) as he limps across the room into the arms of his wife. De-Lovely’s Porter turns to his wife and quips, "If I can survive this movie, I can survive anything.''

Advantages romantic view on a real life edgy story Disadvantages far too sweet
...Fancy of musicals from 50s? Film “De-Lovely” is Cole Porter’s bio and musical at the same time. “ De-Lovely” is quite standard, run-with-the-time film, with an interesting framing device. But not sort of "best hits" collection of Cole Porter's music, it is more like musical. Simple as that! With apparently many tunes performed by modern artists as Robbie Williams, Elvis Costello, Alanis Morissette, Sheryl Crow, and Natalie Cole, this is a treasure story of Cole’s music and memories. Sheryl Crow, Robbie Williams, and Elvis Costello are some of the main singers that interpret Cole Porter songs. Alanis Morissette proves once again, she can do more than a fem-rock on “Let’s do It, Let’s Fall in Love” and Mick Hucknall who is worth watching, is singing “I Love You”.
It's that, what makes “De-Lovely” worth seeing. With the help of a good...

...and sympathised with her. Somehow his infidelity does not appear to taint the beauty of their love
The appearance of famous musicians such as Robbie Williams, Alanis Morisette, Sheryl Crow and Elvis Costello possibly allow a younger audience to connect to the film but generally I do not think that they add or take anything away from the film.
I bought the collectors edition DVD on eBay for £6 including postage. I would definitely recommend watching De-Lovely...
