Advantages: Plays DivX media Disadvantages: Doesn't record own brand media and slow
Philips DVDR 3380, astonishingly, you cannot use Philips own brand discs as the machine crashes when you try! Eventually I returned it to the shop for a replacement, convinced that the machine was faulty. I tried for 3 hours to write a DVD onto a Philips disc with a variety of errors. Their warranty extends one year from the date of initial purchase no matter how recently the replacement unit was manufactured.
Cleaning the head repeatedly did no good. A firmware upgrade did no good.
Basically these machines are garbage. Even when they work the picture quality is abysmal. I would strongly recommend everyone to avoid buying DVD recorders from Samsung. ...

...am very pleased with this Toshiba recorder. It looks sleek and stylish sitting on my glass self. It has a lovely black glossy finish to it and is very easy to use. This recorder is inexpensive. It performs basic DVD recordings without a problem at all. It upscales DVD to 1080p. It supports most recordable DVD formats, including dual-layer discs which is good.
