Couples therapy. Is it necessary..? In my best opinion, it's a yes and no, depending on certain types of circumstances.

When a couple is entering into a marriage or a union, there are lots of things to be considered, really. One has to simply weigh the pros and cons of the advantages against the disadvantages and considering that, a couple enter a marriage, with the hope of it being successful.

Into the journey of a particular marriage, say it doesn't succeed. What do they do..? And say they are at a dead's end. Let me give you a scenario. Jack and Jane, for instance. Jack marries Jane, and after a few years they are having problems that in the first place, they know will bound to come sooner or later in their marriage life. They have parents' problems. Jack's parents dislike Jane, and despite that, Jack married Jane. And years later, the problems that tend to appear small have become big because Jack's parents are too involved and wanting to interfere in their marriage life. In this case, the best would be to go for a couples therapy, because then Jack's opinion versus Jane's opinion would be kind of opposing. And Jack might in the best interest of his parents, tend to 'side' with them, and hurting Jane in the process.

Now say another example. Mary and Jo enter a marry and they start to become happy for a few years. After some time, Jo starts to flirt around with other women and start to have extra-marital affairs. Mary finds out one day and becomes very devastated and starts to confront Jo. They deal with it one to one and Mary decides to give Jo a chance after all since he wants to prove to be a better man. Now in this story, there's no need for a couple therapy for them, since it is clear cut between the two said party.

These being said, I think if a couple truly think that they need a fresher view or a 3rd party opinion from an unbiased side of either one of them, then I strongly advice for a couple therapy. In this way, they could see things from an 'outsider's point of view'.

Summarily, there's no right or wrong answer for couples therapy and do weigh the circumstances extremely carefully and decide whether that therapy is much needed to preserve the sanctity of your relationship or marriage/union.
