Charlie&The Chocolate Factory -
It's as if composer Danny Elfman's fertile relationship with director Tim Burton had been ... more
building up to this, their 11th collaboration and perhaps the one that best encapsulates their shared aesthetics: It's hard to think of a subject better suited to the two men than an adaptation of Roald Dahl'sCharlie and the Chocolate Factory. For the occasion, Elfman has come up with five actual songs (and sings on them), which reminds one of the 1980s heyday of his old band, Oingo Boingo. The first, "Wonka's Welcome Song" is a demented minute-long blast that evokes 1960s kiddie TV. Each of the other four (which use Dahl's own words) is dedicated to one of the children invited to visit Willy Wonka's factory, and each is done is a different musical style. All are fantastically fun. A personal favorite is the mock-operatic "Mike TeaVee," on which Elfman basically transposes "Bohemian Rhapsody" to a hyperactive cartoon universe. The lovely "Main Titles" acts as a transition into the instrumental part of the score and will be familiar to fans of Elfman's music forEdward Scissorhands, particularly its otherworldly, celestial choral sound. The rest of the tracks simply represent the work of Elfman and his longtime arranger, Steve Bartek, at their best, alternately flamboyant, dreamlike, and suggestive.--Elisabeth Vincentelli

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (Full Screen Edition) (DVD)
Mixed reviews and creepy comparisons to Michael Jackson notwithstanding, Tim Burton's ... more
splendidly imaginative adaptation ofCharlie and the Chocolate Factorywould almost surely meet with Roald Dahl's approval. The celebrated author of darkly offbeat children's books vehemently disapproved of 1971'sWilly Wonka and the Chocolate Factory(hence the change in title), so it's only fitting that Burton and his frequent star/collaborator, Johnny Depp, should have another go, infusing the enigmatic candyman's tale with their own unique brand of imaginative oddity. Depp's pale, androgynous Wonka led some to suspect a partial riff on that most controversial of eternal children, Michael Jackson, but Burton's film is too expansively magnificent to be so narrowly defined. While preserving Dahl's morality tale on the hazards of indulgent excess, Burton's riotous explosion of color provides a wondrous setting for the lessons learned by Charlie Bucket (played by Freddie Highmore, Depp's delightful costar inFinding Neverland), as he and other, less admirable children enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime tour of Wonka's confectionary wonderland. Elaborate visual effects make this an eye-candy overdose (including digitally multiplied Oompa-Loompas, all played by diminutive actor Deep Roy), and the film's underlying weirdness is exaggerated by Depp's admirably risky but ultimately off-putting performance. Of course, none of this stops Burton's Charlie from being the must-own family DVD of 2005's holiday season, perhaps even for those who staunchly defend Gene Wilder's portrayal of Wonka from 34 years earlier.--Jeff ShannonDVD featuresThe second disc is filled with a number of distinctive featurettes. The likely crowd-pleaser in most households is "Attack of the Squirrels," which recounts how those fuzzy little creatures (a combination of hard-to-train live animals, animatronics, and computer graphics) can be ornery in their own right. "The Fantastic Mr. Dahl" is a 17-minute look at author Roald Dahl through vintage footage and new interviews with family, friends, and colleagues. "Becoming Oompa-Loompa" follows Deep Roy as he is filmed over and over again through his dance steps and music performances.Roy is a constant throughout the kids' activities as well. You can follow him to learn two different dance steps "Augustus Gloop" and "Violet Beauregarde," and make him taste weird candy inventions in a simple game. "Search for the Golden Ticket" is a five-part challenge that tests your remote-control fingers, your deductive abilities, or your luck. Finally, if you just want basic behind-the-scenes information, "Making the Mix" is a collection of featurettes (around 40 minutes total) covering the film's casting, music, production design, and special effects.--David Horiuchi

Review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by
ChocolateLady
Advantages: Beautifully done, marvelous effects, great performances
Disadvantages: Strange interpretation, direction and adaptation
...Dahl put the emphasis on Charlie Bucket and his adventure and not on Willy Wonka. While the character development of Charlie in this movie isn't too bad, we do get the feeling that Charlie is partially pushed aside by Depp's Wonka. With that, the other lucky kids who have found the golden tickets are even more nominal here. We don't get to dislike them enough so when they meet with their mishaps we feel sorry for them. But Dahl wrote them to make ... ...to show us how deserving Charlie and his family were for some good luck due to their dire circumstances, we just weren't able to embrace this quirky, but loveable family. This doesn't mean that I thought the acting was inferior. Depp showed a completely new side of his abilities and even Freddie Highmore (from "Finding Neverland") gave us something special here. In general, I think that most, if not all the actors did a fine job with what they were ...

Review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by

Advantages: Nice colour movie
Disadvantages: for children
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (2005).
Director: Tim Burton
Actors: Johnny depp, Freddie Highmore.
A young boy wins a tour through the most magnificent chocolate factory in the world, led by the world's most unusual candy maker.
Willy Wonka (johnny depp.) is the strange man behind the chocolate factory, he will invite a few children with one of their parents.
The children would have to pass some strange test to get to the end of the tour ... ...one boy or girl, would be the one to win the big final price willy oferred for the winner.
Personal thoughts:
This is an adventure and musical movie ,that your children will love, it has many colours, and its magic of being in a world of chocolate, were you could see ,strange things, weird people, and strange machines.
I have to say it is one of the worst movies acted by Johnny depp, in my personal opinion.
But ,yet your kids would love it i ...

Advantages: film for everybody, funny, and has great lessons
Disadvantages: it's a bit weird, something on the eccentric side

money can buy you chocolates BUT not happiness
Review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by
windstruck
Advantages: Johnny Depp is in it, has a lot of good lessons to impart
Disadvantages: weird color
5 kids and a chocolate factory.
Who wouldn't want to get inside a chocolate factory and know how they made all those delicious chocolates? I certainly don't want to miss that opportunity!
This movie not only showed what makes the chocolate factory run, work and tick but it also showed the other side of the factory's owner. Chocolates are good for the heart, right? And that chocolates are aphrodisiacs and they lift up your mood. But why does the ... ...versatile actor, Johnny Depp) is in such a foul mood? You have got to see this movie to find out!
Well, this movie could be a bit childish but it is such a wonderful movie that teaches you the importance of having a '"good heart'". Yes, that old cliche must be tiring you but this movie is the perfect example to let you see that you must maintain a happy disposition in order to keep up with life's challenges. And also, if you're a parent, this would ...

For Kids
Review of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by
mariefe18
Advantages: good animation
Disadvantages: not my type, too good to be true
I love eating the candies made by Willy Wonka and when this movie was released I bought a dvd so I can watch it at home. Its a good story but its too good to be true. It was really made to animate you and fill your imaginations. The movie is good although I really don't like what the kids were doing. It just shows how some kids differ from each other depending on their social status, how they were raised and the family they belong to.
The movie ... ...no oompalumpas as far as I know one thing more there is no candy factory as big as a city and there is no river of cholcolate.
Based on what I saw Johhny Depp played a more meaningful role in the Pirates of the Caribbean rather than in this movie.
Kids might find this movie enjoyable but for me its just okay. I watched it just to make time fly by. ...

...This is a review about The new Charlie and the chocolate factory with information about the old movie Willy Wonka And the chocolate factory for starters as the background information so don't get confused because its as clear as day :)
*Background Information On The original Movie*
On Tuesday the 26th of July I purchased Willy Wonka and the chocolate factory for a bargain price (and I think you will agree) of only £5.97 on DVD. After going home I put the DVD into the DVD player like I always do with new DVD's to see what the menu and features are like. I have to admit I was a little disappointed as the menu had no animation or special features it was simply 3 button's that displayed the words, Play Movie, Languages and Scenes. There were no special features of any kind. But I suppose I can't complain for only £5.97.
