This lens is great for all your portraits and because the aperture can be opened to 1.8 it gets enough light that flashless indoor pictures become feasible. The results ... ...as others have mentioned, the blurring of the distant background is very pleasing. Yes this lens has a plastic mount, yes the focus ring is narrow and fiddly and yes, the autofocus motor is an older, noisier, slower type but do I care one bit. I find it excellent.

Advantages: Relatively cheap, light, superb optics + 3rd Generation IS Disadvantages: Not an "L" lense - not sealed against H2O or dust
...my 1st generation IS equipped Canon 28-135 IS. I have NEVER used the panning mode for IS so cannot comment on it's performance. Plus, the wide end of the aperature (f4) is insufficient to deliver that beautiful out of focus background... as the faster f2.8 (or better) L lenses deliver.
OH ... an issue of some merit perhaps ... my model was in the serial number sequence which had a "potential" problem with proper performance of the IS in portrait ... ...keyco de=2112&fcategoryid=216&modelid=11922
I called Canon and they sent me a shipping box as I vaguely recall - and it was all prepaid. The service was great and it came back in a few days.
So... I paid $568 from B&H... however they now sell it for $539 plus a $50 rebate is available! NOTE - my unit here is NOT the more expensive "DO" (dispersive optics) "L" model with a GREEN RING which sells for $1000+! As such - I can easily recommend this ...

The EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM telephoto zoom lens has been developed to meet the high-performance standards that today's photographers demand. Improved Image Stabilizer Technology provides up to three stops of "shake" correction, and the "Mode 2" option stabilizes images while panning with a moving subject. Compared to the original Canon EF 75-300mm IS zoom lens, this telephoto lens has faster autofocus, and overall the lens is lighter and has a smaller diameter than the original. The zoom ring can be locked at the 70mm position, making this powerful lens easy to transport, too.
