Advantages: compact design, large screen, good quality pictures Disadvantages: no night shoot mode
Canon ixus 850:
Canon is known for high quality cameras. This is my favorite brand. The color derived from the camera is bright type, not as vivid as sony or nikon, so it matches my preference.
The best thing about this ixus type will be the compactness. The size is small, but with large LCD screen. The technology in it also quite sophisticated, with 8 megapixel picture, auto focus, video camera capturing, manual mode, and long life battery. My ... ...for one cycle of battery life, so it's quite good.
The features also easy to use, easy to explain how to use it to common users which not familiar with digital cameras before.
I don't really understand about the technical stuffs in this camera because i'm not having the passion in photography, but for a regular user like me, this type is surely a good choice, since your not going to deep in all those technical thing and in the contrary, only using ...

Advantages: fair price, small, light weight, a good mix of digital features Disadvantages: have to purchase extra storage media while not good in moist conditions
well, you may call it a picture perfect as i dont feel any problems with its output. With its compact size and metallic silver color, it hardly even annoys you with its weight. that's why i call it picture perfect. With multi- options for focus, brightness, flash, zoom, hotness, colors (with few colors) it allows you almost all possible tweaks with in. Make sure you have fixed the red eye though. Being a layman photographer, i often use this device ... ...and by reducing the photo/video resolutions, you can utilize the small space for more stuff. I am very particular about the colors in my photos this product do all justice in that department. Its body is very capable to handle all wear and tears though its sensitivity for water (rain) is a serious drawback to me. Battery life is good enough for a day trip and its controls/screen are capable enough to handle this small little tool. ...

Advantages Quality of pictures, build and screen Disadvantages No battery level indicator!
...Having been a fan of the CanonIxus range (and previously owned an Ixus v2 and Ixus 700) I was particularly impressed that Canon had finally put together a specification package in one camera which ticked all the boxes. The screen size and resolution is superb as is the face recognition focusing.
The main problem I found with the Ixus 700 was the quality of low light (mainly outdoor evening) shots. This has been greatly improved with the introduction of ISO 1600 and image stabaliser which makes the previously problem shots an ease and a joy.
My main gripe with the camera is one that is common on all Canon's that I know of - no battery life indicator. Surely this is not an impossible addition - other manufacturers manage it afterall.
In general I have not been disappointed by any aspect of this camera since I bought it 3 months ago...

Advantages Picture quality, Syle, Wide Angle lens, Image stabilisation. 7.1 Mega pixel Disadvantages Red Eye, Centre Spot Fucussing
...I wanted a compact digital camera offering quality lens, ease of use, wide angle capability, image stabilisation and above all good picture quality with enough pixels to allow cropping and enlarged picture size of 16x12 inches.
Research boiled down to two contenders, Panasonic FX50 (just replaced with their new FX30 range so price may be dropping soon) and the CanonIxus850is. Of all the reviews I read I could find little to choose between them so trip to local shop to see first hand. Whilst I liked the 3 inch viewing screen and Leica lens on the FX50 my personal preference was for the Ixus as I found it much easier to hold and having previously owned an Ixus 400 was marginally biased in that direction. Holding the 850 just confirmed my choice.
I chose AllCam to supply because of their near 100% customer satisfaction record...

...General
I bought this camera in the summer (07) especially for my holidays in egypt and i was more than satisfied with the performance of the camera. The quality is very good especially for normal users (i.e. family); professionals might have a different opinion; Not only the size but also the user friendly interface are clear benefits of this camera.
Quality
I took pictures in the sunniest conditions and in bad weather conditions. Both conditions do not really have a influence of the camera as it still delivers great quality. The only problem I had was taking picture in the night which is a problem with almost every camera. I always used the pre-set options, but after trying our some manual setting I realised that the camera has got even more potential. Give it a try - experiment at the beginning a bit and soon you will...

Manufacturer's product description
Canon Digital IXUS 850 IS imaging processor DIGIC III achieved high-definition and higher-speed processing without damaging the beauty of subjects. Real-image Zoom viewfinder can be used to conserve power by turning the LCD monitor off while shooting. Use the LCD monitor to compose close-ups in macro mode since images composed with the viewfinder may be off-center. This camera is equipped with a 3.8x optical zoom lens with a focal length of 4.6 - 17.3 mm (35 mm film equivalent 28 - 105 mm), f/2.8 - f/5.8, which is ideal for a wide range of photography including snapshots and scenic shots. The LCD monitor can be used to check an image during shooting, to play back recorded images or to adjust menu settings. You can have the camera automatically detect the position of a face and use this data to set the focus and exposure while shooting. Exposure Compensation can be adjusted in 1/3 stops in the range -2 to +2. Adjust the exposure compensation to a positive value to avoid making the subject too dark when it is backlit or shot against a bright background. Adjust the exposure compensation to a negative value to avoid making the subject too bright in night shots or when shot against a dark background. Shoot with auto, high ISO Auto, ISO 80, ISO 100, ISO 200, ISO 400, ISO 800 and ISO 1600 equivalent. Raise the ISO speed to use a fast shutter speed when you wish to reduce the effects of camera shake or avoid blurry subjects, or to turn the flash off when shooting in a dark area. Normally, the Auto white balance setting selects an optimal white balance. When the Auto setting cannot produce natural looking colors, change the white balance using a setting appropriate for the light source. Start playback with the image that was last displayed during the last playback session (Resume Playback). However, this image is reset when new images have been shot, when a memory card has been edited on a computer or when another memory card has been inserted, in which case playback starts with the image shot last. The histogram is a graph that allows you to check the brightness of the image. The greater the bias toward the right, the brighter the image. If the image is too dark, adjust the exposure compensation to a positive value. Similarly, adjust the exposure compensation to a negative value if the image is too bright.
