Candyman

Candyman

Folklorics graduate student Helen Lyle's (Virginia Madsen) thesis research leads her into the urban underworld of Chicago's Cabrini-Green housing projects, whose residents are... more...genuinely terrified of "Candyman" (Tony Todd), a legendary figure with a hook for a hand. Skeptical, she "summons" him in front of a mirror and discovers with horror that he's real and wants her to join him in his "mythic" world; when she refuses, he murders those in her wake, leaving her to be charged with the crimes. She tries to explain who the real culprit is, but her efforts fail, and authorities commit her to a mental hospital. This taut horror thriller is based on "The Forbidden," by Clive Barker, who also executive-produced.

This movie came out in theatres when I was about four, and I remember thinking it was one of the scariest things I had ever seen at the time when my aunt made me watch it. Yes, even scarier than when I saw Pet Cemetary, and sad to say I was afraid of the movie Candyman for years. However, you know that things that happened when you were younger or things that you saw when you were younger might not necessarily have the same impact on you when you mature more.

That was what it was like when I watched Candyman again a few years ago. The fear that I had previously felt completely evaded me and I was left with a feeling of stupidity. Why exactly did I find a piece of crap horror movie like that scary? And if you think Candyman was bad you should see Candyman 2. To me, they both seemed like one of SciFi's B-movies.

The acting was neither hot nor cold, and the script certainly wasn't either. Neither was the "special effects" that were supposed to scare me; but then again, could it be because I'm so desensitized by the thousands of horror movies I've watched over the years?

The movie Candyman was about a student, Helen Lyle who decides to write her thesis about myths and Legends, who stumbles upon the legend of the Candyman. Legend has it that the Candyman will appear if you say his name five times while looking into a mirror.

As you can see, the plot doesn't have much substance either. I was more scared when I was younger and my friends and I used to spin round and round in front of the bathroom mirror at school saying Bloody Mary 1, Bloody Mary 2, Bloody Mary 3...But then again, people's tastes differ. You might actually like it. No matter what though, I still think it was a waste of money and this is going to end up as one of those DVDs you have lying around and gathering dust that no one wants to watch again
