Like other Brita filters, the 2-quart Riviera dramatically decreases traces of lead, copper, mercury, and cadmium in tap water, as well as reducing the taste and odor of chlorine. Built with a smart space-saving design, this slim model fits into a refrigerator door and has a handy thumb lever on the hinged water hatch. A simple digital timer tracks filter cartridge life by displaying 2-week interval markers that gradually disappear from view as time passes. When the screen is blank, you know that it's time to change the filter (this is based on Brita's calculation that the average household goes through 40 gallons in eight weeks). This functionality only keeps track of time--it does not actually test filtering results--but it's handy as a basic feature. Brita includes a start filter and a non-replaceable battery with a 5-year life. All pieces of the pitcher come apart for washing by hand.
