Celtic Pride

The Boston Celtics are a professional basketball franchise of the National Basketball Association. They are in the Atlantic division, playing their games in the TD Banknorth Garden in Boston, Massachussetts.

This Celtic team won the NBA championship last year and they go into the current season as defending world champions. The had home court advantage throughout the playoffs due to their impressive 66-16 record in the regular season.

The home court advantage did help them in the playoffs as they had to go the distant seven games with Atlanta & Cleveland and six with Detroit. They beat the Lakers in six games also to become World champions for the first time since 1986.

The set of key individuals who got the Celtic pride back includes their VP of Basketball Operations Danny Ainge. He was in that great 1986 champion's team. Their coach is Doc Rivers, who played with the Atlanta Hawks against the 86 team and has now coached these once rival organisations to their 17 championship.

For the players, I would start with Paul Pierce; he has been with the Celtics the longest, having being drafted as the 10th pick in the 1998 draft.

The next key player would be Kevin Garnett. Garnett was one of the first phenon to come right out of high school into the pros. Pick fifth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves(in the 1995 draft) he was the face of the franchise before moving to the Celtics.

The next key player has to be Ray Allen. He too started his career with Minnesota were he was drafted 5th overall in the 1996 college draft. His next stop was with the Seattle Supersonics where he spends the better part of his career before joining the Celtics. While we are at this guy watch a great performance by him and Denzel Washington in "He got game" a movie about all the behind the scene manoeuvres that goes on in college basketball recruiting.

The role players included Sam Cassell (this guy has been around for ever) Rondo, Edie House J Brown (I remember him as a key player with the Miami heat when they were battling the Knicks in the early 90s), Kendrick Perkins and Leon Powe.

We have to go back to the past to link up with the present generation. The Celtics first great one has to be Bill Russell (their great centre). If you watch any black and white reel of the Celtics he is the one that you would see. He get them the most championships, 11 in total (between 1957-69). Never did see him play.

The next face of this organisation has to be Larry Bird, he was drafted out of Indiana State after the 1979 season and by the time he retired he help them win three championships.
He got some help from Kevin McHale (drafted from U of Minnesota as third pick overall in 1980).
Robert Parish (trade with Golden State in 1980).
Dennis Johnson (trade with Seattle Supersonics) won three championships in all. The first with the Seattle and the last two 84, 86 with Boston. He is off late.

Danny Ainge (played for Brigham Young in his college days and was drafted by Boston in the second round and joined the team in 1981. He was with the Toronto Blue Jays organisation to play baseball.
Bill Walton played the role of sixth man in this team. This 1986 won the third championship in the Larry Bird era is considered as one of the greatest of all time.

You can not talk about the Celtics without mentioning Red Auerbach; he would be the one with the big Cigars (celebrating each of the many championships in which he was involved as either head coach or GM). The guy that coach Larry and Co in the 80s was KC Jones.

So how come it took the Celtics so long to win another championship after the 1986 season,? Your answer can be found in the death of their number one pick of the 1986 draft (Len Bias). Bias, drafted out of the University of Maryland was supposed to carry the franchise for the next 13-15 years or so in the line of Bill Russell and Larry Bird. He died about a week after the Celtics made him their number one pick in the 1986 NBA draft. Mention his name in the DC metro area and everybody would tell you exactly where they were when they got the news of his death.
