Black was a hell of a game, if rather a bit long...
Okay, it was very long,
I remember 1 mission I started playing, it was 1:30 PM, and when I had finished, it was 3:05 PM (Approx.). The missions in this game are so bloody long, and some of them are rather difficult, and with the missions so long, save points were automatic and only happened when a mission is over, so this game can become easily frustrating.
Alright, that's it with the bad parts, now for the good things about this game.
The graphics are superb. When I got this game ($30, bargain) I was like "Dayam", referring to the graphics, of course. The good thing about this particular game is that it can be played on an older TV. When the game is started up, you are asked if you want to play in 50, or 60 Hz, 50 obviously being for older TVs, and 60 for newer ones.
The gameplay is top notch, and the game does a good job of keeping you immersed in the game. When you are running low on health, the sound dims down, as if you are at the bottom of a swimming pool, and the screen goes black and white, also, you start to hear a loud, beating heart, and the controller vibrates in accordance with the beating heart.
As you are fighting against Russians, it is only natural to have abit or Russian in there, such as when a grenade is lobbed at the enemy, you will hear "GRANADA" ( with the "R" being pronounced the way that ethnic people pronounce Burek, not "R" like a growl, also, that is not a typo, that is how they say it) as they run for cover.
There are plenty of weapons you will handle during the course of this game, everything from Uzis, to snipers and rocket launchers, and usually the only was to get these weapons is to take it from your enemy, this adds more challenge to the game, especially for the rocket launcher, as it takes more that a third of your health.
The cutscenes at the start of each mission are a pain, as they can't be skipped, and they are mostly talking and nothing else. Not so bad the first time, but raher annoying after hearing it 30 times.
Another good thing about this game is the destructible environment - eg cars, walls, gravestones. They all can be smashed to pieces.
Although you wouldn't know it, the game leads you in a straight line through the levels, and EA have disguised this really well.
Sorry I couldn't tell you more, but I only passed the first two levels, and want part way through the third.
Bottom line: If you see this game for a small amount of money relative to the year and game title (aka Cheap), grab it as quickly as possible, get the game if you have to dive to the shelf and punch someone in the face.
