Terrible keyboard (tiny keys, not overly sensitive)
Battery seems to drain fast when used frequently
Seems to be particular in compatibility with bluetooth headsets
I got this phone to replace my 8703e, which was throwing Java errors. This is a definite improvement for the business user in so many ways.
For phone calls, I find the reception to be strong (given, I have this phone on Verizon, so I'm sure network plays into things). It easily pairs to bluetooth headsets. With that being said, I have had 2 different Jabras (both BT8040s), which are meant to pair with multiple phones. For some reason, the Jabra interfaces perfectly with my LG Voyager, however, they just don't seem to jive with the 8830- voices sound metalic and robotic. When it does decide to "adjust" users say they cannot hear me well. Perhaps this has to do more with the headset, however, I think it is useful to note, as this is totally contradictory with my LG experiences on the same headset. My experience is that the BlackBerry is just a bit more "fussy".
In any case, once you are ready to place your call, you have the option of voice dialing, which is relatively easy to activate. If you opt for speaker phone, the sound tends to be very loud; I find that I'm often turning it down, whereas with other phones, I always wish I had more volume. Muting is easy to do, which is important to me, as a remote user, as I'm often on conference calls while traveling. Sound quality from both sides is great- I haven't had any complaints at all and I find voices come through crisply.
As to using it for email, I find that the keyboard is among the worst. I depended on this for an entire day to respond to emails and found it to be very frustrating. The keys are tiny and close together. You really have to pound on the keys to get the typing to register. This is a major drawback to me.
Putting aside the keyboard issues, scrolling is wonderful and makes for easy editing, as you can scroll up/down or side-to-side with ease. Spell check activates automatically (based on settings) and comes in useful for writing business emails. The only down-side of spell checking is that there isn't an "add" feature to use when spell checking occurs, requiring instead, that you go out to the main screen and go through the overall options menu to add to your custom dictionary. As long as you can remember what you need to add independently, spell checking works well.
The battery does well for standby, however, I find that after an hour long phone meeting, the battery tends to be near drained.
Overall, this is a sleek looking phone. The size is relatively compact, making it easy to slide into a holster, purse or pocket. It's geared towards the business user, however, one has to be pretty forgiving when it comes to the keyboard.
