The 171 L/Rs employ a DŽAppolito (midrange-tweeter-midrange) configuration, just like other top line models. Atlantic Technology uses this design because it emulates a sonic point source while producing a wide, smooth horizontal spread of sound with limited floor and ceiling reflections. The end result is a clear and detailed soundfield with excellent imaging and great dialogue intelligibility. Atlantic Technology uses the same advanced woofer/midrange driver in every System 170 speaker. Produced using sophisticated automation, this advanced speaker is at the heart of System 170's performance ability. Its Coated Composite Molded Graphite cone is light, stiff, and well damped for fast response and low distortion. The L/Rs also use a new high performance 1" silk dome tweeter, with a powerful motor structure and heat reducing Ferrofluid cooling. Its high frequency response is smooth, extended, and open. Their compact enclosures are heavily built using Medium Density Fiberboard, an excellent material for this purpose, and covered with a Black Oak polymer laminate.
